Management Summary

Orbit GIS is Orbit GT's desktop GIS system. Use Orbit GIS for design, creation and management of your spatial data, local or corporate resources. Orbit GIS includes data creation and editing functions, metric construction tools, all common analysis tools and a uniquely powerful object inspector.

Orbit GIS is extendible through an extension API that can access the core data management system and can relate to server extensions. Extension examples are : Georeferencing tools, Strabo photogrammetry tools, Geoprocessing tools, Asset Inventory, Mobile Mapping, and many more.

Technical Summary

Orbit GIS is the top version of Orbit's desktop solutions. It connects to the same resources as any other Orbit Client (such as the Orbit Client,  Orbit FlexMap or EOS) and adds in-depth interactive editing capabilities and powerful presentation tools. Orbit GIS is platform independent and can access shared resources over any network.

For editing objects in a corporate environment, you require the EOS Interactive server. Any viewer system connected to EOS Interactive will immediately reflect the data changes applied by any of the editing Orbit Clients.  You can put EOS Interactive on any internet server, and combine it with FlexMap for immediate updated display on the web.

Orbit GIS support OGC protocols and popular tiled mapping services.

System Requirements

Platforms supported : Any that support Java 6*.

Orbit GIS can access local data as well as remote data (EOS / WMS services) located in your network or over the internet.
Windows platforms require at least Windows2000/XP to support Java, but higher specs are advised.

Mac platforms require OSX 10.5 or higher on Intel processors.

You should take into account that when reading largs datasets, an equivalent RAM size is advised to retain proper performance. Large image datasets should be organized as compressed images or in Orbit's OMI format. Large vector datasets should be arranged in a database (MySQL, Oracle) or in Orbit's OVT format.

In general, you should take he following issues into account when checking performance :

  • Data and RAM requirements
    • Imagery does require disc capacilty and performance. It does not require a lot of RAM memory.
    • Vector data is either processed in real time (OVT storage format), or taken into memory as a whole. The latter requires RAM capacity.
  • Performance issues
    • Imagery data : be sure you set up multiresolution imagery. Orbit's OMI format is optimized for very fast access and is platform independent.
    • Vector data : optimize your dataset specs for performance, e.g. by defining a fast-rendering graphical legend & symbols, by specifying render scale limits etc.

*Note that not all storage formats are supported on each Java platform. Some formats require vendor specific format-reader libraries that run only on dedicated platforms (see MrSID, ECW, FME).

* 64bit, linux/unix and Mac OSX versions does not support third-party libraries (MrSID, ECW, FME - at this time of writing).
