Edit Objects Overview

This page describes the general operations and principles of Editing Objects.
More information about all features of the Edit Tools Sidebar, see : Sidebar Edit Tools.

Structure of objects

In Orbit, all objects are structured as defined by the model to which they belong.
Each single object always has two components:

  • A spatial component (graphically drawn on the map view). The spatial component can be edited by the Edit Tools
  • An attribute component (listed in the Object Inspector when the object is selected). Attribute information can be edited in the object inspector. Attribute structures are to be edited in the dataset stucture contents.

Editing objects

All editing functions operate on the selected object(s).

To edit :

  1. Select the object
  2. Select the edit tool
  3. Apply the edits

Basic Rules for Editing

  • Each function remains active until you choose another one. In most functions, you can select other objects without 'leaving' the function.
Watch the activated function in the mapcanvas statusbar
  • Each function behaves according to the spatial type of the selected object(s) : either point, line or area.
  • Functions can have different behaviour when using SHIFT or CONTROL
  • Some functions relate to a model within a certain dataset. To indicate the model to be edited with these functions, tick the record indicator next to the model in de datasetlist.
  • Some functions operate only on the focus object. The focus object is indicated in the Object Inspector.
  • Other functions operate on all selected objects.

Be carefull to use the right Edit Tool in combination with the right amount of selected objects!

Saving Edited Data

After editing data from a specific dataset, an extra symbol will appear in the dataset list next to the title of the dataset. This new symbol, a small “save” icon, indicates that it is necessary to save the dataset to apply the changes.

The applied changes will be saved after clicking this “save” symbol.

For example:

The “save” symbol next to the dataset title “Red” indicates that there are some applied changes that are not saved yet.
